Unplanned

I would recommend a DVD by Abby Johnson titled “Unplanned: The Sensational True Story that Made Headlines Across the Nation.” I was fortunate enough to be provided a copy in a special pre-release directly from Tyndale House Publishers for review purposes. You can purchase a copy of the DVD or the book that it was based on for under $20 at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Unplanned-Dramatic-Planned-Parenthood-Eye-Opening/dp/1414339399/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303513588&sr=8-1) or directly from the publisher at http://mediacenter.tyndale.com/1_products/details.asp?isbn=978-1-58997-666-5. I have already given away my complimentary copy to my lead pastor. You can also find out more information about the upcoming Unite For Life Webcast at http://uniteforlifewebcast.org/.

What was so encouraging about this DVD was the fact that a neighboring pregnancy resource center reached out to Johnson through relationship, prayer, compassion, and care. They did nothing out of condemnation or confrontation. I also was impressed with the way in which the narrator treated Johnson and many of the employees of Planned Parenthood. The authors refuse to paint them as evil or as the enemy. They took great care to explain their path to volunteering at the organization and their hopes of helping women. However, they did not endorse Planned Parenthood and were not shy in describing what they did and for what reasons that corporation did them. The DVD is not propaganda – but purposeful in telling one story of redemption.

The Bible reads, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, ‘Behold, we did not know this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?” (Proverbs 24-11-12, ESV). I am encouraged by what I see rising up out of this younger generations . . . there seems to be a yearning to recover a holistic gospel (in both words and deeds). There is a pursuit for justice – a deeply-held belief that God brings restoration. And yet, I am equally concerned, in our drive for such acts of kindness as clean water, conservation of resources, human rights, etc., that we are now overlooking (and quite possibly for political purposes, for fear of being labeled a Fundamentalist, or just an overwhelming sense of discouragement) the issue of abortion. The value of life. God’s heart is for the defenseless. Why does it have to be either-or? Let’s find creative and compassionate ways to help those who are facing such difficult decisions. Let’s look at the what the Spirit of God is doing and join him on the mission.
