Today is day three of our MCA Pastoral Leadership Team Prayer Retreat. Much has been read, studied, discussed, and prayed from the Epistle to the Hebrews. The Bible reads, “Now that we know what we have-Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God-let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all-all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help” (Hebrews 4:14-16, The Message).
Imagine being one of the original readers of this letter? Just when you thought you finally understood what it was going to be like to be a Hebrew Christ follower – as if it could not get any more difficult – your capitol is destroyed. Yet again, you are left with little that speaks to your identity as the Chosen People. An exile all over again – no land, leadership or law to call your own.
But what if what is left is the most valuable of all? What if by letting go of all that you used to see as significant, you find salvation in the fullest sense of the word? What if Christ really is the fulfillment? What if he really is the Dwelling Place? The Temple? The Law? The Priest? The Prophet? The King?
Then don’t ever let go. And boldly enter the Holiest of Places. Accept the help.
