Atonement

Today, David Brakke (the lead pastor at Maltby Christian Assembly) concluded our series called “Be Contagious” – speaking today on the subject of atonement. The Bible reads, “The next day [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me. I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel. And John bore witness: ‘I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God'” (John 1:29-34, ESV).

God uses the events of this world – even the most evil of moments – to fulfill his will. Palm Sunday is a vivid reminder to us of God in the Flesh who willingly entered the city gates knowing full well what would take place on the hill outside. Palm Sunday reveals an immature and immoral people – one moment they were found cheering “Save us, now” and the next moment chanting, “Crucify him!” And yet, Jesus does all that is necessary to show love and satisfy justice. He pays an insurmountable debt.

Pray this week for a church on the mission. Pray for those who need to hear the Message. Point people to the cross and to the empty tomb. He is risen.
