Today Josh Ziefle, professor at Northwest University and member of Maltby Christian Assembly, shared an unforgettable Mother’s Day message with the church. He quoted some interesting folks in his sermon:
Cyprian – “He cannot have God as his Father who does not have the church for his Mother”
The Apostle Paul – “Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity” (1 Timothy 5:1-2, ESV)
Bono – “Grace carries the world on her hips”
The last quote really shook me up. I had this troubling thought…our mission has been hijacked. Throughout history there have been numerous politicians, entertainers, and investors who have made promises that only the church has the right to make (and meet). We are Mother Church. We are commissioned to show care, concern, and correction.
Not another program. Not another promoter. Not another product.
But how did we get here? With others dictating the conversation? Making us choose sides when we are supposed to show a completely different way altogether? We are not to be ideological allies but change agents.
How do nurture those who we have neglected?
