I just completed Carmine Gallo’s Talk Like Ted: The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the World’s Top Minds. Of course this book is written primarily with business presentations in mind. However, these principles can more often than not translate easily towards other forms of public speaking (including preaching and teaching).
A timely read indeed. Our church leadership team is always evaluating what we do and why we do what we do. We explore ways that we can simplify and become more intentional. I am challenging our teaching team (starting with me) to communicate in less time but with even more focus (and creativity). What a challenge! This book has been an incredible discussion-starter.
My favorite quote was when the author proposed, “Science shows that passion is contagious, literally. You cannot inspire others unless you are inspired yourself. You stand a much greater chance of persuading and inspiring your listeners if you express an enthusiastic, passionate, and meaningful connection to your topic.”
The old adage is that you cannot take somewhere that you have not already been. If the gospel has not first transformed my life then how will I ever believe that the gospel can change another life?
