The Whipping Boy…

Our family continues our multi-year journey of reading together (many of the selections being Newbery Medal Award Winners).

The list below does not include the works that failed to win the award (but that we still enjoyed together) such as the seven books included in The Chronicles of NarniaHatchet (an honor recipient), The Hobbit, or the The Starcatchers Series (which we are still working through).

Here is the list to date (along with my respective reviews)…
  1. The One and Only Ivan (2013)
  2. The Giver (1994)
  3. The Tale of Despereax (2004)
  4. Bridge to Terabithia (1978)
  5. Dead End in Norvelt (2012)
  6. Walk Two Moons (1995)
  7. The Whipping Boy (1987)
  8. Out of the Dust (1998)
  9. Bud, Not Buddy (2000)
  10. Kira-Kira (2005)
  11. Shiloh (1992)
  12. Flora & Ulysses (2014)
  13. A Year Down Yonder (2001)
  14. Crispin: The Cross of Lead (2003)
  15. The Midwife’s Apprentice (1996)
  16. A Single Shard (2002)
  17. When You Reach Me (2010)
  18. Holes (1999)
  19. A Wrinkle in Time (1963)
  20. The Higher Power of Lucky (2007)
  21. Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! (2008)
  22. The Graveyard Book (2009)
  23. The View From Saturday (1997)
  24. Moon Over Manifest (2011)
  25. Criss Cross (2006)

As you can see from where the above list, this was one of my favorite selections thus far.

Young readers will enjoy this concise, imaginative, and humorous tale of two unlikeliest of allies.  One who is mistreated and another utterly despised.

Now on to our next Newbery Award winner – Missing May (another short book).  Anyone read it and care to share your thoughts?
