Uncle Tom’s Cabin…

I recently read Harriet Beech Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin when I heard that it was one of the bestselling books of all time (and many consider the novel to be one of the greatest catalysts behind the abolitionist movement).  Unfortunately, the book is now probably known for a few of the characters’ names being misunderstood and misused as insults.

However, when this book was first published in the nineteenth century, a face and name was finally given to the injustice of slavery.  People being objectified were now personified.  The tragedy was no longer someone else’s problem.  Someone needed to do something.
