Preaching Killer Sermons…

Though there are better resources on the topic, I would still highly recommend Lane Sebring’s Preaching Killer Sermons: How to Create and Deliver Messages that Captivate and Inspire.

My favorite chapter was on “being totally present when you preach (overcoming distractions by preaching boldly)”.  A few takeaways…

Reasons we are often nervous before we preach

  1. If we don’t feel adequately prepared
  2. If the subject matter is going to be difficult (Kindle, 1637)
  3. If we are too concerned about what they will think of us

Ways to overcome nerves

  1. Find a quiet place to review our notes
  2. Think about our opening words and practice saying them
  3. Think less about ourselves and more about the listeners
  4. Channel our nervous energy into passion for the content
  5. Pray like crazy (1672)

How to manage distractions

  1. Be aware of internal and external distractions
  2. Expect distractions but do our best to eliminate them (1691)
  3. Be well-prepared
  4. Keep preaching through just about anything
  5. Do not be so tied to our plan that we miss an opportunity (1709)
  6. Pray

Avoid using throwaway words

  1. Rehearse our sermons out loud
  2. Prepare well
  3. Slow down
  4. Consider using a manuscript for a time
  5. Queue ourselves for your next thought
  6. Watch our game film
  7. Enlist the help of a friend (1760)

Pick up a copy and let me know what you think.
